The 2026 Special Olympics USA Games are officially underway in the Twin Cities, and there’s much excitement around town. All over the University of Minnesota and at the National Sports Center, athletes had the opportunity to settle into life in the dorms and feel out what each respective venue is like before competition starts. For many of the athletes, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and they’re enjoying every second of it.
At the Track & Field Stadium, athletes were feeling out the track and shaking out their legs. It’s the day before the races start, and athletes are already showing enthusiasm. Over at the Thrivent Fan Fest, athletes and fans alike enjoyed a variety of pop-up vendors, fun activities, and a photo booth. There’s also a stage for musical performances.
This week just started, but it feels like the Games have been going on all week. That’s the level of engagement and buzz around the city. That’s the importance of Special Olympics being highlighted.
