The ASHA Leader Profile

Woman talking and two people are listening.
Denise Cardona speaks to Special Olympics Healthy Hearing volunteers during Special Olympics Health Athletes® at the Special Olympics World Winter Games Turin 2025.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) profiled Denise Cardona, Senior Clinical Program Manager for Special Olympics Healthy Hearing, in the May/June issue of The ASHA Leader. The story follows how Denise’s early experiences as a Healthy Hearing volunteer during her time as a student led her to a career caring for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and provided a roadmap for how current and future audiologists can get involved to help reduce the disparities people with IDD face.

For audiologist Denise Cardona, what started as a single volunteer opportunity with Special Olympics Healthy Hearing (a discipline within Special Olympics Healthy Athletes®) as an undergraduate evolved into a career focused on supporting and advocating for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Cardona now serves as the senior clinical program manager for Healthy Hearing, which provides free audiology screenings, education, and referrals to athletes with IDD.
