On Wednesday, 1 April 2026, the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis formally committed to the Special Olympics Global Coalition for Inclusion, marking a significant step forward in the nation’s efforts to expand opportunities for persons with intellectual disabilities. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister with responsibility for Education, Youth Empowerment and Disabilities, Hon. Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, on behalf of the Federation, and Ivor Blake, National Director of Special Olympics St. Kitts and Nevis. The signing ceremony was also attended by the Hon. Samal Duggins, Minister of Sports, underscoring the government’s unified approach to promoting inclusion and athlete development across the country.
Our ongoing partnership with Special Olympics is a testament to our vision for full inclusion. Special Olympics’s extraordinary work in St. Kitts and Nevis, particularly through its Unified Sports and Unified Champion Schools initiative, is a game-changer for youth of all abilities. This programme is not just about sports but about reinforcing inclusive education, strengthening social-emotional skills, fostering inclusive school sites as mandates in our Education Act, and creating meaningful opportunities for youth leadership.
Through this partnership, the Coalition empowers member countries to expand inclusive education initiatives such as Unified Schools and Special Olympics Unified Sports®—models that use sport as a catalyst to foster cohesive classrooms and more inclusive communities. The agreement also promotes multilateral collaboration and cross-sector public-private partnerships to help finance inclusion programs, ensuring that policies are translated into practical, sustainable, and achievable actions at the level of local schools and communities. Globally, the Global Coalition for Inclusion is supported by Lions Club International Foundation and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), whose contributions have been instrumental in advancing inclusion efforts worldwide.
Over the next three years, St Kitts and Nevis will expand Unified Sports and Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools® to 25 schools, training over 100 teachers in inclusion and engaging over 3,000 students with and without intellectual disabilities across the two islands.
Hon. Samal Duggins, Minister of Sports, added: “Special Olympics has proven that when you give people with disabilities a chance, they don’t simply participate, they rise to the occasion. They have proven they can lead. And they can inspire. This Global Coalition for Inclusion is about turning that belief into real action. It means more sports in our schools and communities, more investment in athlete development and athlete leadership. And more investment in Unified Sports, where ability doesn’t divide us but brings us closer together.”
The signing ceremony coincided with the hosting of a regional leadership academy by Special Olympics St. Kitts and Nevis, held this week at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort. This event further highlights the country’s growing role in regional leadership and advocacy for inclusive development.
