In a powerful step toward advancing inclusion, the Republic of Niger has strengthened its commitment to expanding inclusive sport and education opportunities for students with intellectual disabilities through the Special Olympics Global Coalition for Inclusion.
The milestone partnership, formalized during a signing ceremony in Niamey on June 1, brought together government leaders, Special Olympics Niger representatives, athletes, families, and partners in a shared vision of a more inclusive future.
Held under the leadership of Honorable Professor Sidikou Ramatou Djermakoye Seyni, Minister of Population, Social Action and National Solidarity, the ceremony marked an important moment for advancing the rights of all students — both with and without intellectual disabilities — in classrooms, communities, and on playing fields across Niger.
“This protocol is not just an administrative document. It symbolizes a strong political will, active solidarity, and a collective commitment to ensuring that every child, regardless of their abilities, can learn, play, thrive, and dream,”
The partnership reflects a growing recognition that inclusive education and sport are essential tools for national development. Through this collaboration, the Government of Niger and Special Olympics Niger will work to strengthen inclusive programming, promote equal opportunities, and foster greater social acceptance for persons with intellectual disabilities.
Special Olympics Niger has continued to build local engagement through sports, health initiatives, and community outreach, using sport as a catalyst for confidence, connection, and empowerment. Niger will expand Special Olympics Unified Sports® programs nationwide, bringing together students with and without intellectual disabilities to play on the same teams while strengthening inclusive school environments.
Next, more than 4,300 young people will be involved in inclusive activities, including 2,200 in Unified Sports, and 400 beneficiaries of Healthy Athletes® screenings. At the establishment of 60 Unified Champion Schools, 120 teachers will be trained to lead these efforts in their communities.
“Together, let us make sport a symbol of dignity, equality, and fraternity. Together, let us make Niger a country where no child is left behind,”
These efforts align closely with the Global Coalition for Inclusion, which brings together governments, civil society, and partners to expand inclusive education and sport worldwide. Partners present at the event included representatives from Lions Clubs International and Niger Armed Forces.
“This is the power of partnership in action. When governments lead with commitment and communities come together through sport, we create opportunities for every young person to belong, learn, and succeed,”
The Coalition, made possible by a generous grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), is strengthened by key global and civic stakeholders including Lions Clubs International Foundation, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Fondation Botnar, and textile brand H&M Move. Together, their support helps drive community-based inclusion efforts worldwide.
