Board Director, Athlete Leader Mentor, Mwi Liaison, Co-Chair Fundraising & Events Committee, Co-Chair Volunteers Committee, and Track Program Assistant Coach
Driven by her passion for supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities, Juanita Easton began volunteering with Special Olympics Bermuda (SOBM) in 2016.
In her role as a Recreational Aide at the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute (MWI), Bermuda’s only mental health hospital, she has built strong, meaningful relationships with clients over the past twenty years. Juanita immerses herself in each person’s needs to advocate effectively for them, especially for those who are unable to speak up for themselves. She focuses on creating and developing events, programs, and opportunities for service users to engage in their communities, assists with transportation to appointments and activities, and collaborates with corporate partners to implement strategic plans that enhance services and outcomes for her clients. These attributes were fittingly recognized in 2021 when she was awarded the Bermuda Hospital Board’s Aide of the Year.
Juanita's professional experience and personal commitment led to her appointment as a Director on the SOBM Board in 2019. She has also assumed the roles of Athlete Leader Mentor, Co-Chair of the Fundraising and Events Committee, Co-Chair of the Volunteer Committee, and MWI Liaison. Her rapport and ability to cultivate strong relationships with clients, many of whom are also Special Olympics athletes, have been essential in addressing their needs and managing logistics for their participation in training and events. By utilizing her connections, Juanita has opened numerous doors for athletes to access activities that may not have been available to them otherwise. As an Athlete Leader Mentor, she guides athlete leaders through all aspects of leadership and prepares them for both local and international events and conferences. Her leadership and mentorship have been vital in empowering athletes to thrive. Juanita also supports the Track Profewm as an assistant coach.
Through these roles, Juanita has had several opportunities to travel overseas, supporting athletes and athlete leaders at competitions and conferences, including the 2019 and 2023 Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi and Berlin, Germany, respectively, as well as the USA Summer Games in Orlando, Florida, and Athlete Leader conferences in the U.S. and Caribbean Islands. In her personal time,
Juanita enjoys boating, dancing, traveling, and spending time with family. She is also a Brand Ambassador and Influencer for Fit in Fierce Athletics, where she utilizes various social media platforms to inspire and encourage plus-size women to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle through exercise.
