My name is Rachel Veldkamp, and I am 29 years old. I am a swimmer with Special Olympics Suriname. I have been involved with Special Olympics for over 15 years. I have competed in national swim meets and even the Special World Games in Athens, Los Angeles, Abu Dhabi and Berlin.
Over the years, I have won gold, silver, and bronze medals—a total of 59 medals! In addition to my swimming achievements, I am also the captain of our swim team, leading and inspiring my fellow athletes.
Besides swimming, I love woodworking and painting. I have turned my hobby into a small business, which allows me to earn money for my health and home expenses.
I am also a health messenger for Special Olympics Suriname and a member of the Caribbean Athlete Leadership Council as Youth Leader.
Special Olympics means a lot to me. It has helped me find my purpose and develop my leadership skills. I want to inspire other athletes with goals and dreams to be their best. I love coaching athletes and leading them, giving them helpful tips tools to succeed.
