Ron SZETO is a seasoned bocce athlete who has been actively involved with Special Olympics Hong Kong for more than a decade. In addition to his athletic achievements, he serves as an athlete leader committed to advancing Special Olympics' mission.
In 2023, Ron underwent training to become a Health Messenger. The training covered topics such as Special Olympics Health, developing practical health plans, and effective storytelling. Through this experience, Ron gained essential knowledge about nutrition and exercise, equipping himself to maintain optimal health and enhance athletic performance.
This expertise enables him to sustain physical well-being and achieve improved results in sporting events. Recognizing that he is susceptible to stress, particularly when encountering challenges or perceiving inadequate performance, Ron applies stress-management techniques learned during Health Messenger training to respond constructively to obstacles.
His role as a Health Messenger has greatly inspired him, offering opportunities to benefit both himself and others with intellectual disabilities. As an athlete leader and Health Messenger, Ron collaborates with Special Olympics staff and fellow Health Messengers to share health information and organize activities that promote healthy lifestyles among people with intellectual disabilities. He provides education on nutrition, including hydration and balanced eating habits, and instructs others on exercises essential for maintaining good health, a vital foundation for physical and mental resilience in this community.
Ron frequently shares the following message with Special Olympics Hong Kong Health Messengers: “To achieve different goals in our daily lives, we should be physically and mentally healthy.” He firmly believes that the contributions of Health Messengers profoundly impact lives and hopes that everyone will unite in support of their work.
